Introduced by John Hudson at ATypI 2016, and coined by Nick Sherman in an A List Apart Article, variable fonts are fonts that can hold a number of weights, widths, and other styles in a single font file and adapt to their context.
Typeshift app references local fonts on your device. After installing them, enter your font’s name (the fonts name as it shows up on Illustrator, Photoshop or Sketch) where it says ‘local font references’. If the font exists, Typeshift will confirm it and apply that font to the selected text element.
We totally recommend you use something like Fontstand to try fonts or talk to the foundary / type designer themselves and see if you can get a trial license!
